Global Harmonized System (GHS)

Global Harmonized System (GHS)

The United Nations developed GHS in an effort to provide a system of guidelines for communicating hazards. Ensuring the safe production, labeling, transportation, handling and disposal of hazardous chemical materials. Officially adopted by the United States on March 26, 2012. GHS was soon adopted by OSHA to address “workers right to know” under HazCom 2012.

The purpose of GHS was to create a common approach to classifying chemicals and hazards. Using GHS clearly communicate the hazard related information on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). This is done through the use of visual elements such as pictograms and signal words. Allowing a user to interpret their meaning regardless of geographic location or native language.
